The Crucible John Proctor - True Hero - 876 Words
In the play the crucible, Arthur miller uses the character of John Proctor who, residing in hysteria-shaken Puritan Salem, rises beyond the hysteria and proves himself a true hero through his heroic virtues, challenging of authority and power, self-sacrifice and self-realisation. Proctor is the only individual willing to question the puritan belief system. He believes that no man should have control over the life of another. Only God has the power to judge and condemn. Therefore, choosing the more tragic outcome by not allowing himself to lose his individuality and sense of self-conflict of ethics between what is right from wrong as well as sheer lack of common sense. Sarojini Naidu free essay sample
The Indian English poetry that flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was largely an imitation of the English Romantic poetry both in its form and matter. No attempt was made to project the essence and nuances of the rich culture and tradition of India. The Westerners inturn wished for a glmpse of Indian life and customs through the literature of the time. As Edmund Gosse says in his introduction to Sarojini Naiduââ¬â¢s The Bird of Time (1912) : What we wished to receive was not a rechauffe of Anglo-Saxon sentiment in an Anglo-Saxon setting, but some revelation of the heart of India, some sincere penetrating analysis of native passion, of the principles of antique religion and of such mysterious intimations as stirred the soul of the East long before the West had begun to dream that it had a soul. ( ââ¬Å"Introductionâ⬠The Bird of Time ) Such a revelation of the heart of India began with the poems of Toru Dutt. Greatly influenced by the puranas and the religious culture of ancient India, she interpreted Indian life before the Western world by recapturing the legendary past of India in her verses. Following Toru Dutt, Sarojini Naidu wrote poems rooted in Indian folklore, myths and legends thus showing the West the soul of India. Sarojini Naiduââ¬â¢s poetry can be regarded as a mirror of India. She portrays the customs, traditions, festivals, myths and legends, men and women, flaura and fauna, landscape and skyscape of India through her poems. According to A. A Ansari, the most characteristic quality of Sarojini Naiduââ¬â¢s poetry besides its lyrical wealth is its purely Indian character. Her poems ââ¬Å"Summer Woodsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Village Songâ⬠are rich in Indian situations and sentiments. The poem ââ¬Å"Village Songâ⬠included in The Golden Threshold has a purely Indian atmosphere with the girl hurrying off to the forest: ââ¬Å"Where upon the champa boughs the champa buds are blowing; / To the koil- haunted river-isles where lotus lilies glisten,â⬠(ââ¬Å"Village Songâ⬠The Golden Threshold). The bridal songs, cradle songs, sandal, saffron and the lover riding for the wedding are all images associated with India. The poem also has a message that the material life is meaningless and that ultmate happiness of the mind can be attained only in the heart of nature where atma can meet the paramatma. This message is akin to the ancient Indian tradition where the rishis used to meditate in the interiors of the forest away from the hubbub of the world so as to attain nirvana. Similar idea is included in the poem ââ¬Å"Summer Woodsâ⬠where the narrator is craving to run away from the ââ¬Å"strife and song and festivals and fameâ⬠and from the ââ¬Å" toil and weariness, the prays and prayers of menâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Summer Woodsâ⬠The Broken Wing). She wishes to unite with her lover in the peacefull solitude of ââ¬Å"deep blossoming woodsâ⬠. This union of individual soul with the oversoul is suggested through the archetype of Radha and Krishna, the divine lovers. The purely Indian myth is framed with a vrindavan like landscape reflecting the geography of India. The crimson gulmohurs, koel, tamarind and neem, jasmine boughs, slumbering serpents, water-lily pools, as well as the music of the flute are all images of India inscribed in the mind of every Indian. In Sarojini Naiduââ¬â¢s poems we find an attempt to reproduce the melodies of Indian birds, the fragrance of Indian flowers, the colours of Indian soil , the sweetness of Indian fruits and the coolness of Indian breeze through minute description of Indian nature. Sarojini Naiduââ¬â¢s description of India is comprehensive and realistic. No significant aspect of Indian common life is untouched by her. In the poem ââ¬Å"Village Songâ⬠included in the collection The Bird of Time, she gives a realistic portrayal of rustic India. It is the opening song of the section named ââ¬Å"Indian Folk Songsâ⬠in the collection. As such the poem has folk elements in it with the young maiden at the panghat. Panght or water quay is a routine of Indian rustics where they go to bathe or fetch water in pitchers. The poem is about the young girlââ¬â¢s fears and superstitions regarding the long and lone way which she has to cover after filling her pitcher from the Jamuna. Seeing the approaching darkness, she is afraid that some snake will sting her or some spirit will cast its evil spell on her. Here the girl represents all rural Indians who has imbibed superstious beliefs. In the girlââ¬â¢s anxiety about the worried mother and brother waiting for her, we get a picture of the love, care and bond in an ordinary Indian family. She realizes that only God can save her and chants ââ¬Å"Ram! Re Ramâ⬠which again is typical to Indian people. This spontaneous overpouring of the maidenââ¬â¢s feelings, at another level relates to the spiritual concept of the soulââ¬â¢s fear during its journey to reach God. The Jamuna river, and the boatmanââ¬â¢s luring song indicates vrindavan and Radha-Krishna myth. Thus the imagery in the poem is drawn from Indian landscape and mindscape. Thus Sarojini Naidu immortalizes the familiar scenes and everyday life of India through her songs. However, she ignores the ugly aspects of life as well as the life of modern industrialized India. She pictures a colourfull, romantic and sentimental India. The patriotic feelings in some of her poems is also noteworthy. She believed in the motherlandââ¬â¢s unity, aspired for spiritual and political freedom, and hoped for a better and brighter India. In her poems we come across Budha and the lotus, the flute player of vrindavan, the milkmaid Radha, and the fishermen, snake charmer, weavers, dancers, palaquin bearers of India. She weaves the everyday life of India together with the glorious myths and legends which are the pride of every Indian. She spoke and thought in the language and sentiments of India. By composing ââ¬Å"an authentic Indian English lyric utterance exquisitely tuned to the composite Indian ethos with all its opulence and splendourâ⬠, Sarojini Naidu brought fame, dignity and recognition for Indian English poetry in the West ( Naik 22). Moreover, the patriotic zeal and the concern for the common people of India makes her essentially a poet of India.

The theory behind Reaganomics essays
The theory behind Reaganomics essays The theory behind Reaganomics was sound, but when applied in real life its consequences are still present more than ten years after the fact. The tax cuts applied early in Reagan's first term cemented the ideology for what the next eight years of his reign would uphold. The Economic Recovery Tax Act would cut taxes roughly twenty five percent over a three-year period. The ideology of Reagan's administration quickly received supporters of what he was doing. Entailed in these tax cuts were reductions in welfare programs which was also a popular idea amongst Reaganites. But what is puzzling is that David Stockman held a large portion of the truth of these tax cuts from Reagan and the public. What would occur with the ERTA was a substantial deficit. This deficit was not the intent of Reagan. Reagan's intent was that the tax cuts would allow the public to have more money. This additional money which would have otherwise been spent on taxes was supposed to be put back in the economy by the people. The ability of people to now spend more on homes, cars and other goods would boost the prosperity of the economy. But Stockman had a theory of his own. He saw that this deficit would force Congress to make cuts of its own on social programs. Stockman with held this information from the public and from Reagan so that when Congress would reallocate funding, it would avoid giving it to social programs. Stockman's theory does not make sense with the political views of the time. If Reagan and the public were in favor of cutbacks on the welfare system, why would Stockman with hold this information from a population who was in favor of the result? Stockman was an intelligent man who for some time worked in the House of Representatives and had connections to many people in Washington. He served as the budget director for the Reagan Administration. As budget director, his intentions were to acquire a balanced budget by the next t...

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service Research Paper
The Army and Air Force Exchange Service - Research Paper Example Fortunately AAFES has the opportunity to counter the potential decline in sales. With retail facilities operating in Europe and Asia, AAFES has the opportunity to increase sales in an area where the outside economy is unreasonable to shop in. Military service members receive cost of living allowance to offset the difference in cost of living off the economy. Despite having additional income the difference in price makes shopping AAFES more desirable as the customer's first choice. Social and cultural factors are perhaps the most critical when developing retail merchandise assortments. AAFES customers consist of military service members whom are mobile and global customer and are exposed to many global trends. According to the U.S Department of Defense demographic report, military active duty personnel stationed overseas consist of 7.4% stationed in Europe, and 6% in Asia. For this reason AAFES continues to practice market development by bringing products that customers have been exposed to in one country and can continue to buy when they move to another. Government intervention in the retail industry can put damper on business objectives. AAFES is not exempt from the possibility of mergers. In 2004 the Department of Defense proposed merger of AAFES, the NEX (Navy Exchange), and MCX (Marine Corp Exchange). The motion which would eliminate 2,500 jobs never took place, however AAFES is still planning for the coming of the Unified Exchange. This is evident in the joint ventures which have occurred amongst the exchanges to cut costs and increase buying power. With the government slowly lifting bans on restrictions on categories of merchandise, AAFES must prepare themselves for the moment that other changes could take place. Suppliers must be identified, merchandising practices decided upon, and more. In doing this AAFES will lose no time in planning to capture additional sales. Technological Creating customer loyalty has been an ongoing priority and challenge for retailers. Technology has allowed retailers to implement loyalty programs that also track consumer purchases. Amongst change in demand in consumer electronics is the decline of CD music sales in favor of mp3 sales. AAFES can expect the

The state removing children from their parents and taking them into Essay
The state removing children from their parents and taking them into protective custody - Essay Example For some parents, drugs are more important than their kids. Such people may make their children use these drugs (compelling children to use drugs). Children are nuisances for another group of parents. All these results in severe child abuse issues. There were cases when children had to undergo heavy physical tortures also. When parents get divorced, children have to stay with one of the parents or with relatives or other caretakers. They may have to undergo physical and mental abuse and even big assaults also. Such children will be deprived of parentââ¬â¢s love and care and will lose a good family environment. Relatives and caretakers will be least bothered about their welfare and will torture them to maximum. These abused and neglected children will suffer from various mental and physical problems that can lead them to wrong paths. Some children are exposed to drugs in their childhood itself since they their parents use drugs. Children, who are brought up in families where there are frequent fights, will naturally have fighting mood or other bad characteristics. Also if parents are having criminal background and other unlawful practices, children who are brought up in that environment also will have criminal characters and behaviors. Children are abused in different ways and are made deprived of all their childhood happiness and privileges. They are troubled and exploited and are subjected to mental and physical exploitations. There were incidents in which children were beaten, burnt and killed even. In a particular case, a petition was filed in Waukesha County Juvenile Court in order to keep 3 girl children in protective custody as their drug-addicted father troubled them making them accompany him during a crack cocaine binge. In another incident in 2004, a 9-month-old boy died accidentally and later doctorââ¬â¢s testified that the childââ¬â¢s injuries were

Germans children Essay Example for Free
Germans children Essay The children of the Jewish Holocaust during the Nazi era were placed under very unjust, cruel, and exacting circumstances. Education, a basic right of children in developed nations of that era, was denied to Jews in areas of Europe where Hitlerââ¬â¢s rule and influence were adopted. During the time of transition during which the exclusion of Jewish children from schools was being implemented, non-Jewish children were formally taught that their Jewish counterparts were inferior. In order to do this, Jewish youth were used to demonstrate the appearance of inferiority by placing them in front of the class and pointing out their characteristic phenotypes as being undesirable. Occurrences like this placed severe limitations on the ability of Jews to learn in these schools, as they were constantly mistreated, neglected, and abused because of their race. Growing restrictions were also placed upon these childrenââ¬â¢s accessibility to the resources within the schools, until finally they were prevented altogether from attending schools, which were open now only to Germans children (FCIT). Fred Spiegel describes his first weeks of school (shul) in Dinslaken, Germany, where he had to attend a Jewish shul, as the German schools were no longer open to Jewish children (Spiegel 27, 29). The alternative Jewish schools were understaffed and unsupported by the state. Spiegel himself recalls his schoolââ¬â¢s having only one teacher (29). Later, Arnold Blum recalls an even more frightening occurrence in which his school was being burned before his very eyes (Blum, 20). He immortalizes this event in his memoir ââ¬Å"Kristallnachtâ⬠(20). More than just restricting these Jewish childrenââ¬â¢s ability to attend state schools, they were being stripped of their right to any education at all in the burning of their Jewish school. The parks were also an area in which Jewish children felt the abuse of Nazism. German children, who were armed with the idea that Jews were inferior, played in the parks and discriminated against the Jews they found there. The Jewish children were called names, spat upon, and otherwise abused by non-Jewish children. Spiegel also describes his time spent in the park behind his house in Dinslaken. The last time he remembers going there, he was cursed and called a ââ¬Å"Dirty Jewâ⬠by the other children (Spiegel, 28). His grandfather too was cursed by his friends. Kristallnacht, which occurred on November 9-10, 1938, ushered in the destruction of all that was Jewish. Beyond the burning of schools came the burning and destruction of Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues (Blum, 20). Fred Spiegel recalls the night he was forced to leave his home and the abuses even he as a child faced. He was already emotionally crippled by the sight of his community being gutted by fires. He further recalls being cursed and spit upon by the non-Jews as he and his family were being forced from their homes. Some Jews were evicted to concentration camps and ghettos. Others were turned out of the country altogether. Spiegel writes about the events he witnessed upon entering his home, which had been destroyed, for the last time as a child: ââ¬Å"My mother, sister, and my Aunt Klara were standing on the balcony crying. My grandfather had been arrested and taken away by two policemen. [â⬠¦] Soon the two policemen returned. We were told we could not stay in our apartment and had to go with them. On the way out we passed by the downstairs apartment that was empty because the Abosch-family, a Jewish family who had rented it from my mother, had been expelled to Poland a few weeks earlier. Their apartment too was totally destroyedâ⬠(Spiegel, 30). Children were also abused through the mandate that they live in the ghettos. Because the ghettos were sequestered from the rest of the German civilization and restrictions were placed on items that could be brought into the area, children often suffered hunger. Many of them were reduced to smuggling food into the ghettos in order to aid in the support of their families. While these were very risky actions, some Jewish children were left even more vulnerable as their parents were killed or taken away to concentration camps. These orphaned children were left alone in the ghettos to make a living under doubly cruel circumstances.

The Dangers of Censorship in High School Every day well meaning parents, concerned members of society, and Christian activist groups across the country fight to censor the literature that is being taught in high school classrooms. The word censorship carries all types of implications and angles; it involve s a denial of an author's right to guaranteed freedoms of expression. However, as it relates to education, this issue goes a great deal deeper than the standard First Amendment argument. In attempting to ban certain types of literature from the classroom, censors are taking away the rights of teachers to prepare students for a reality that their parents do not seem to think will ever affect them. They likewise deny students the chance to learn how to rationally make their own decisions and instead try to keep that control for themselves. Censorship is preventing intelligent, thoughtful teachers from pushing students to reach past what is just on the page. Whatever their motives may be, those who seek to repress the use of certain materials are doing more harm than good. Those who actively fight to censor, ban, or restrict the kinds of literature that can be taught in America's classrooms are convinced that anyone who truly believes pornography and obscenity are problems must be in favor of censorship. Kristol (1972) points out that students are being corrupted by books and that anyone who doubts this need only look at the lives of the teachers who oppose him to find adequate proof of the damage they do. He finds that it is the responsibility of the educated in society to regulate censorship, but that these are the very people who are convinced that what is being taught by sensitive educators is indeed appropriate and ev... ...our schools--Censorship of classroom books in the last ten years. M&Sââ¬â¢s Business and Economic Environment
M&Sââ¬â¢s aims and objectives are to make money for shareholder and to improve their profit margins where and when ever possible. Their approach to reaching the aims and objectives are to design extremely attractive and inactive products for their customers that are of a high quality. As these products are of high of high quality not everyone can afford these products and are targeted at a slightly niche market (upper middle to upper class citizens).M&S also have a commitment called Plan A, in which they are devoted to environmental issues such as refusing to send waste to landfills and using alternatives methods of waste disposable such as recycling within the business where possible and also externally, as well as lowering carbon emissions when possible. These things will help them save money, however the main reasoning for these policies M&S have issued are to increase the their appeal in the eyes of the public, therefore making people think that they are helping the environmen t if they shop with them. Which they are but only to a certain extent. These policies are in force as the government have fiscal and monetary policies that effect all businesses and the way they operate, including M&S. An example of a fiscal policy would be direct taxation, this can come in the form of corporation tax which is currently set at 20%. The level of which corporation tax is set at can effect a business hugely, as if they are set low it means that M&S wonââ¬â¢t have to pay as much interest on their profit and will have more money to re-invest into the business. This could be into for example, hiring more staff as a result of an increase in demand. This means if M&S carried out hiring more staff alongside other businesses throughout the UK as a result of an increase of stimulation in the economy then the unemployment rate would drop.Giving people more disposable income to spend on higher quality goods in such places at M&S, and further stimulating the economy. On the oth er hand if the corporation tax was set at a high level the businesses, including M&S, would have to pay out more of their profits to the government in order for them to keep the economy running. This would then lead to M&S having less money to re-invest. Meaning it will be harder to expand maybe as much as theyââ¬â¢d planned to. However if businesses are paying more in corporation tax then the government will most likely be needing it to stimulate the economy to encourage people to start spending. And will in turn increase the amount of business and sales that M&S will receive. So if the corporation tax is high it will be better for all businesses in the long run. The government also have a capital allowance which means that businesses can buy expensive machinery and are eligible to claim the tax back from those machines. This is so that because the tax on these machines will be at a relatively high price and will encourage businesses to buy them and spend money. This would apply to M&S as they have the self-service machines that customer can scan and bag their own shopping if time is of the essence. The amount of tax on all of the machines that M&S have bought throughout all of their stores will add up to a large sum. So if they can get that money back it means that they will have more money to reinvest back into the business, creating more opportunities to make money and therefore generating more profit in order to meet their never-ending goal which is to make as much money as they can to keep the shareholder happy. This will also heavily apply to cavies, where M&S get all their ready meals from. As they are a factory with countless machines they will be able to get a bursary from the government for the tax which they paid on the machines. This means that they will be able to sell their ready meals for a cheaper price which means M&S will save money (and will be hitting their aims and objectives) alongside with their customers. Then as they are cheaper it wi ll attract more sales resulting in more ready meals bought from cavies giving a win win win situation to cavies and both M&S and their customers. The government also have monetary policies that will affect all businesses, and these include such things as interest rates. This is because the interest rate doesnââ¬â¢t just affect businesses but every citizen of the UK. And this effects businesses in a big way because it has a direct link to how much money people and businesses receive back from the bank in return of banking with them. Currently the interest rate is at an all-time low of 0.5%, and has been stuck at this rate since 2009 because of the recession. The interest rate has been set this low so that it encourages people to take out loans and mortgages, as it means that people wont have to pay as much money back on their loan. This then has a ripple effect and will increase the amount of first time buyers to join the property ladder alongside other buyers that will sell and bu y a more expensive house. This will have a huge affect on the housing industry and therefore also M&S as they have a largeà home wares section that people will purchase new goods from to furnish their new homes with. However, on the other hand a low interest rate is very bad for people who are wanting to save and earn interest on their savings. Because if the interest is at 0.5 and someone has à £10,000 in a savings account which will be no more than 1.2% at best then in a year they would only make à £120 profit. This means that people wonââ¬â¢t have as much disposable income compared to if the interest rate was at its average 5 ââ¬â 6% and people would be saving about five times as much. And if the interest rates are low then large businesses like M&S wonââ¬â¢t invest their money into the banks that are in England, they will put them in offshore accounts in such places like China, which has an interest rate of 6%, or India with a rate of 7.25%.These countries have a hi gh interest rate as they are up and coming countries ((NEDCs, (newly economically developed countries)) and have a high growth rate and show a promising return upon investment. Another monetary policy that would affect businesses would be the amount of capital allowance they allowed each citizen to have. This is currently set at à £10,000, and if you earn under that amount you be taxed so that you can meet the national minimum standard of living. This then links back to more disposable income people have, as the more they have the more they are likely to spend, and the more chance that money will end up in M&S.It could go as far as someone who saved à £200 in taxes and buying a new game console of someone second hand and they could then repay a debt to someone, then they could spend that same à £200 on a weekly shop at M&S. So no matter who saves money for what reason the direction of money is too unpredictable to even guess so saved up money will just as easily end up at M&S as anywhere else.

The Catcher in the Rye Essay - 790 Words
The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by J.D. Salinger. It is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a cynical teenager who recently got expelled from his fourth school. Though Holden is the narrator and main character of the story, the focus of Salingerââ¬â¢s tale is not on Caulfield, but of the world in which we live. The Catcher in the Rye is an insatiable account of the realities we face daily seen through the eyes of a bright young man whose visions of the world are painfully truthful, if not a bit jaded. Salingerââ¬â¢s book is a must-read because its relatable symbolism draws on the readerââ¬â¢s emotions and can easily keep the attention of anyone. Salingerââ¬â¢s full use of symbolism goes unnoticed until his novel is read a second or third time. Most of itâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This character is going to tell it like it is, and he does. The most powerful emotional standpoint in the story is when Holden goes to his sisterââ¬â¢s elementary school to deliver her a note. While he is there, he discovers two words scribbled on the wall. ââ¬Å"Fuck you.â⬠Most people would look at that and think nothing of it. Some would bow their heads in shame at the person who thought it was funny. Others might laugh. Not Holden. He did not think about the normal persons response to the note. He thought about the childââ¬â¢s response. About how a little kid is going to see that seemingly meaningless phrase and wonder what it means; about how some dirty kid would explain what it meant; and about the person who wrote it and how they are destroying the childhood of everyone who reads the ââ¬Ëharmlessââ¬â¢ graffiti. This section takes the reader to the door of Holdenââ¬â¢s mind. It is at this point that one truly understands his emotions. As previously mentioned, it is obvious of Holdenââ¬â¢s intentions from the first chapter. The reader learns that they are not going to be following the life story of some random kid; they are going to read about t he introversive thoughts and assumptions everyone makes at some point of their lives. Throughout the tale, it is obvious that Caulfield is depressed and as the story progresses, he seems to lose himself in the real world.
